Anxiety Therapy
Everyone experiences stress, especially during difficult times or transitions. Ordinary stress or anxiety is typically situational, and does not interfere with your daily life. Anxiety becomes a problem when it is present nearly all the time and makes it difficult to relax or to enjoy yourself.
Anxiety can look like:
Unrelenting feelings of worry
A constant sense that something is going to go wrong
Restlessness, and a feeling of being on-edge
Irritability that may impact your relationships
Trouble concentrating
Decreased sleep
Avoidance of people or situations that may trigger your anxiety
You might try and temporarily distract yourself from the anxiety by constantly checking social media, over-working, mindlessly eating, or watching TV.
You are in the right place to find true relief from your anxiety.
Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I can help you to recognize the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and actions. You can start noticing your thinking and learn strategies to perceive situations in a more realistic and helpful way. Anxiety is often fueled by imagining the worst case scenario and asking yourself an endless stream of "what ifs," most of which likely never come to pass. Through Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), you can learn more effective ways to relate to your thoughts and feelings and to move towards your values, regardless of your fears.
Learning grounding mindfulness strategies may help you connect to your present experience and to calm your nervous system. This might look like slow deep breathing, petting your dog, or savoring the taste of a piece of chocolate. This might also look like noticing your thoughts pass by without getting too attached to them.
You may also benefit from incorporating Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy into your treatment, which works on a deep level to decrease the negative impact of painful life experiences. EMDR utilizes your body’s natural ability to heal and can also shift anxious thinking patterns, helping you to change your "what if" script to "I can handle what comes my way"
